The digital clock sitting on the bedside table reads 5:00 am, too early for anyone to be awake on a Sunday morning. But Jongdae finds himself restless, sleep had left him for good. On the other side of the bed, Junmyeon is sleeping peacefully. He looks especially angelic like that, Jongdae thinks. No creases on his forehead from overthinking, the apples of his cheeks not too prominent, and a slight smile playing on his lips. Beautiful, ethereal. He’s too lucky. Too lucky to be married to someone like Junmyeon.

And as he brushes off the stray hair on his husband’s face, he realizes what he has been missing for the past year.

His job as a composer demands him to work in the studios beyond midnight, because inspiration only hits him then. When he wakes up in the morning, Junmyeon would be long awake and is already preparing their breakfast. Sometimes, he would wake up, and Junmyeon would be already gone. But there would always be a note stuck on his Pikachu coffee mug that would ultimately make his day.

It’s been quite a while ever since he’s seen his husband this vulnerable and calm, simply beautiful.

Their marriage hasn’t been its best lately, but Jongdae is sure that things are about to change.

He decides that it’s about time for him to pamper his husband the way he’s been pampered by the other for the 4 years they’ve been together (1 year married and 3 years as a couple). Make this day a special one. And making him breakfast is the first step. Sadly, the only cooking he can do is frying. So he chooses the simplest breakfast meal that he knows Junmyeon would appreciate.

He slowly slips out of bed, careful not to wake his husband up. He toes on his slippers and heads for the kitchen. It’s already been a year since they got married, but if Jongdae were to be completely honest, he’s only cooked in their kitchen once. Junmyeon is the one who does all the cooking, and take-outs are always an option.

A few months ago, Jongdae planned a surprise for his husband’s birthday. But that surprise, that he thought was fool-proof, ended up being a total disaster. The aftermath was a couple bonding session by the kitchen sink, scrubbing burnt pots and trays.

Jongdae thinks highly positive of this attempt though. He believes that the amount of YouTube tutorials he watched and how-to articles he’s read is enough to prevent any mishaps in the kitchen. He prepared all the ingredients the night before, buying them at the small grocery 2 blocks from their apartment complex and careful to hide them from Junmyeon’s sight.

[ ] Crispy bacon
[ ] pancakes with fresh fruits and a simple syrup
[ ] brewed coffee

The food on the list are simple enough, so Jongdae takes a deep breath and starts. He decides to make the pancake first. Out of convenience and fear, he bought a box of pancake mix instead of making them from scratch. He didn’t want to risk making the pancakes too soggy or too dry, so he just grabbed one of the boxes that said ‘just add water’. The instructions on the side of the box were clear enough, and Jongdae finishes the pancakes quicker than he expected. The first few had burnt edges, but the last ones look good to him.

In 30 minutes, he has managed to prepare breakfast for both him and Junmyeon with very minor injuries that involved a slight burn and a small cut. He sets up the table with a huge grin on his face, because it’s been quite some time since they last had a home-cooked breakfast together. On Sundays, they usually just eat at their favorite café about 3 blocks away from the apartment complex. That café is very important to them, because that was where they met.

Jongdae still remembers that day, how Baekhyun and Chanyeol conspired together to trick him into an unsolicited blind date. A blind date that was entirely catastrophic - someone got doused with piping hot soup, someone tripped and face-planted on the asphalt outside the diner, and someone fell in love, deeply.

Being the latter, the messed up first date didn’t stop him from wanting to see Junmyeon again, and he’s just glad that when he found out that the feelings were mutual. There was something about the accountant that enticed Jongdae - his frankness and honesty, his sharp looks, his weirdness. He was different, and that made him all the more endearing.

The more they went out, the more he saw how special Junmyeon was.

He was calculating and goal-oriented. His job requires him to be, and Jongdae could see that those qualities have seeped into the other boy’s personality. He dislikes being disorganized, and Jongdae still remembers the look on Junmyeon’s face when he first brought him to his studio that resembled a dump site.

The more he knew, the more he wanted to know.

And when he thought that he knew Junmyeon well enough, that the other boy was uptight and sort of mechanical. The other agreed to bring him to his apartment, and his paradigm shifted completely. Jongdae admittedly assumed that Junmyeon’s apartment would be monochromatic and simplistic - all lines and right angles. Something that would suit the personality Junmyeon projected. So when he entered, he was shocked by light blue walls and the photographs that adorned the said walls - artistic and dramatic. But the bigger surprise came when Junmyeon shyly admitted that the photographs were captured by him.

Junmyeon was interesting, because Jongdae never thought he’d come across someone who was so enigmatic, so full of mystery and surprises.

So one date turned into twenty more, and Jongdae fell even deeper, and he knew even then that there was no more turning back. He was irrevocably in love with Junmyeon.

The proposal came easy. It was simple and straight-forward.

He popped the question on their 3rd anniversary. There were tears, a lot of them. Because there were too much emotions. It was overwhelming, even to him because he didn’t realize that a single word could bring a person so much happiness.

They didn’t wait much longer to get married, so they opted for a simple and private wedding with family and close friends.

Married life isn’t much different, Jongdae thinks. But it’s probably because he immediately buried himself in work, hoping to save-up for their dream house as soon as possible. But he ended up being a horrible husband to Junmyeon, and it took him an entire year to realize that.

Just as he was finishing setting up the table, he hears footsteps - the distinct shuffle of Junmyeon’s feet in the morning when he’s still disoriented from sleep. His hair is sticking out in all directions, but he looked beautiful nonetheless. And for a while, Jongdae is speechless. He will never get used to or tired of his husband’s beauty, never.

“Hmm, you cooked?”

He simply stands by the table as Junmyeon approaches. There’s a brief silence as Junmyeon takes in the sight; he smiles. And Jongdae thinks his heart might’ve skipped a beat or two, because there’s even a hint of a blush on the other’s face.

“Do you like it?” he asks, gesturing at the food he oh-so-carefully plated. Despite having a high chance of tasting the bad, it looks good at the very least.

“Are you sure you made these? This aren't take-away from the diner that you reheated and plated?”

♡♡♡

“Jongdae…”

Junmyeon’s voice is almost threatening, but Jongdae doesn’t relent. He’s been planning this surprise for weeks now, and he’s not about to give it away.

“Don’t worry too much, okay? This is me making it up to you,” he says, reaching for Junmyeon’s hand and giving it a reassuring squeeze.
He knows how much his husband hates surprises, because he had been at the receiving end of a slap caused by an innocent intention of making his other half smile.

Junmyeon nods and quiets down, but Jongdae can feel him over-thinking and calculating, still not convinced that the place they’re going to is 100% legal. It’s not like Jongdae had ever brought Junmyeon somewhere illegal, well, he has. But it wasn’t even intentional.
The drive doesn’t take long, and in a couple of minutes, they arrive at a non-distinct apartment complex. It looks comfortable and homy though, but from the car, it’s quite difficult to see what kind of business happens in the complex.

He feels Junmyeon’s hesitation, so he gestures for them to get out of the car before the other gets the chance to change his mind and run away.

“Dae? Where are we?”

Before he can answer, there’s a sudden burst of sound that comes from the complex that answers his question.

“Are we…?”

There’s a quick, obvious change in Junmyeon’s demeanor. Jongdae is glad he’s there to take it all in, because there’s a huge smile on his husband’s face. And he just knows he’s doing it right.

They’ve always talked about wanting a son. And he knows that Junmyeon has been dropping hints the past year, hints that he was too afraid to listen too. Because he didn’t think he was ready. He wasn’t even completely capable of caring for his husband, much more a baby.
But he thinks that now, one year into their marriage, he’s somewhat ready for the big change. And he just hopes that this works out for him and Junmyeon.

“Let’s go in?”

♡♡♡

"Dad, appa, this is Luhan, my best friend, teammate, and… boyfriend."

"Boyfriend???"

Jongdae can feel Junmyeon stiffening beside him, and he knows he should say something to lighten up the mood. But he finds the situation amusing, and the scowl on his husband’s face and the pout forming on his son’s face are very endearing and adorable. So he waits a bit more.

“Appa…”

He notices the clenching of Junmyeon’s jaw and the squinting of his eyes, his overprotective father instincts are most definitely kicking in.

It’s been 17 years since they brought the cute little chubby boy into their family, and Jongdae knows that it’s difficult for Junmyeon to grasp the fact that their little boy is now old enough to date. At first, the thought had rattled him up a bit as well, but he knew he had to accept the fact that his son will be sought after especially because of his good looks and football skills.

Junmyeon leaves without a word, and Jongdae thinks it’s his way of holding back from saying anything that will hurt their child.

“Minseokie, don’t worry about it okay? You too, Luhan. You’re appa’s just shocked, but he’ll be okay.”

The sad smile on Minseok’s face makes his heart ache a bit, but he knows things will be alright.

He follows Junmyeon out to their garden, and the first thing he notices is that the scowl has been replaced by a pout that’s very similar to the one Minseok was sporting earlier.

“Hey,” he says, as he walks towards his husband’s hunched figure. It’s easy to tell that Junmyeon isn’t really upset; he’s just not taking the news well.

“Dae, can you believe it? Our son’s 19, and he’s in college. And oh my god, he’s not a baby anymore. I remember carrying him in my arms, and it feels as if it were just months ago!”

Jongdae smiles at the outburst, because it’s true. Time went by too quickly, their baby boy grew up almost instantly.

“This is weird for me too, really. Our little bun is now a full-grown man, but I’m proud really. Of you, of us, of him. You’re an amazing father, and I hope you know that.”

Junmyeon stands up to meet his gaze. He’s still beautiful. 17 years didn’t do anything to him, nothing’s changed.

Junmyeon wraps his arms around Jongdae’s waist and pulls them closer to each other. Jongdae thinks it’s nice, being able to hold each other like that.

“Don’t worry too much! Our son’s a smart kid, and I don’t think Luhan’s planning on doing anything stupid. I mean, I think he’s too in love with our son.”

“Yeah, I’m quite sure he’s really smitten. He looks at Minseok the same way you look at me, so he’s probably really in love with our son.”

They share a laugh, and Jongdae feels the tension leaving Junmyeon for good. They hold each other for a while longer, because it’s things like this that they miss.

“I love you so much, you know that?”

“Of course silly, don’t worry, I love you too.”
